There is so much negativity around Muslims in the media which is often misleading. Some of the country’s leading newspapers and media outlets publish brazen lies about Muslims causing scaremongering and exacerbate community tensions which have contributed to a rise in Islamophobia. There are so many successful Muslims doing some wonderful work and we need to unite, showcase and promote their work and Islam in a better light.
The Muslim Council of Britain describes itself as ‘the UK’s largest and most diverse national representative Muslim umbrella body with over 500 affiliated national, regional and local organisations, mosques, charities and schools’. The council represents the interests of Muslims in Britain.
The Muslim Council of Great Britain is to launch a campaign in Parliament for fairer media coverage later. The council said there was ‘a serious problem’ with the way the UK media reported on Islam and Muslims. The Muslim Council of Britain’s newly-formed Centre for Media Monitoring (CfMM) will present its findings in Parliament.
Muslims do so much good, give so much in charity. Zakat is based on income and the value of all of one’s possessions. It is customarily 2.5% (or 1/40) of a Muslim’s total savings and wealth above a minimum amount known as nisab, but Islamic scholars differ on how much nisab is and other aspects of zakat.
According to figures received by the Charity Commission, British Muslims were, in fact, estimated to have given approximately £100 million to charity during Ramadan 2016.
It is about time there was some Public Relations (PR) around Muslims to promote Islam in a positive light. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the Western world. Islam is a religion of peace (the extremists don’t define the religion) and Muslims can be some of the friendliest, most hospitable people.
Muslims in the UK need an independent PR organisation funded by Muslims whether through Zakat or other means. This PR organisation will promote Muslim good news stories and successes nationally and internationally. It will counteract the negative news out there and become a valuable marketing machine for Muslims.
We ask the Muslim Council of Britain to put together a plan and launch this incredibly important initiative in a targeted way and tackle Islamophobia head on.
