Last summer Shukri Yahya, a 12 year old refugee from Somalia, drowned in a river in Bury. Shukri moved to the UK two years ago with her family and had been badly bullied at school for months. Despite several visits to the school the bullying continued and her family now believe it played a role in her death.
Schools should be a happy, safe environment for children. But, with increasing islamophobia and racism across the world Muslim children are now suffering daily verbal and physical attacks. Last year in the UK a record number of children were excluded for racist bullying and a recent report in California found that 40% of Muslim students had encountered some form of bullying at school.
No child should have to live in fear or face abuse in school. In the UK we need to address the growing racist and Islamophobic bulling in our schools, colleges and universities. There needs to be more funding and research into programs that actually make a difference.
Sign our petition to tell the government to do more to make sure that no other child has to suffer like Shukri.
