Earlier this year Belgium banned halal and kosher slaughter.  Across Europe, including the UK, there are calls to follow in their footsteps.

Every day the religious freedom of Muslims is being threatened.  From the choice to wear hijab, eat halal meat or grow a beard our choices are This is yet another proposal from right wing extremists that is driven by anti-Muslim rhetoric and feeling.

These bans are another way for right wing nationalists to build their own agendas under the guise of animal protection.  Joos Roets, a lawyer who represents a group of Islamic institutions, argued that the ban was intended to stigmatize some religious groups rather than its stated purpose, to protect animals from suffering.

It’s up to each and every one of us to stand up against this prejudice and threats to religious freedom before it is too late.

We can urge the government to uphold the right of citizens to freedom of religion, as protected under Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights, including in the provision of food (halal slaughter).
